Safeguarding in Sport Audit - TANI IN TOP 8!!!! 4th Apr/11

sc
TANI received some very pleasing news from Paul Stephenson (NSPCC). TANI is currently sitting at 'satisfactory' following our audit which is currently the highest level awarded. Only 8 other sports are at this level.....including the big sports! To get to Substantial rating we need to role out the TANI Clubmark NI (only 11 other sports have this recognition). TANI has started this role out thanks to clubs supporting the 2 child protection courses organised during March. So its good to know that Taekwondo/TANI continues to grow even higher in standing with Sport NI, NSPCC, and others.

NI Squad Weekend with Nikos & Lesley Jakubiak 29th-30th Jan/11

sc
It was another excellent weekend of kyorugi training over the 29th/30th January 2011 with international coach Nikos Jakubiak and 4 times British Champion Lesley Jakubiak.

A packed weekend kicked off with a FUNdamentals class for 7-12years who wanted to wet their toes in a kyorugi class. It was another large turnout of interested kids who attended the class in the Valley Leisure Centre (a NI Kyorugi Squad Centre). It was so good to have a female role model for the girls in the form of a successful fighter such as Lesley.

Saturday saw two more NI Squad sessions in the other NI Squad Centre in Carryduff based on tactics. The guys and girls had their final session on Sunday morning which started with a presentation on Skill Acquisition. It was fantastic to have Lesley stuck right in there with the guys.

The weekend came to a superb ending when the kids on the NI Talent ID stream showed off their skills to Nikos as part of their ongoing assessment. Everyone performed to a high level and their advancement continues!

sc

This 3 day course for the 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate in Tutoring in Sport was designed to qualify TANI's educator workforce to tutor in total confidence, giving them everything they need to become a part of the education workforce.

The qualification provides learners with the knowledge required of how to plan, design, deliver, manage, facilitate and review learning sessions in sport. Those who qualify will be eligible, alongside their Taekwondo-specific and occupational competences, to deliver Taekwondo-specific, vocationally related qualifications.

Bertie Nicholson, Keith Farrell and Niall O'Brien had the pleasure to experience this excellent development opportunity.

Golden Delight at Dorest Open 24/Oct 2010
sc Competition success continues, this time down in Dorset. Sunday 24th October saw three Junior Development NI Squad fighters compete in the 2010 Dorset Open competition in Bournemouth, which attracts teams from all over GB, and some Europeans. This competition was all about implementing the tactics being developed in the NI Squad where the mantras are, coming to get you , drop-in and slide back- hit back.

James Johnston (-51kg) was up against the British Nationals silver medalist who was aggressive and rushed in with his attacks. James slid back, sometimes right across the ring. then countered at the appropriate point. James simply outclassed and battered his opponent until the fight was stopped by the referee at 26-7. James re-wrote the fight manual!

The opponent Dermot McAteer (-55kg) fought was also a seasoned fighter. In only his third fight Dermot did really well, one silly head shot was the only real difference. Dermot was 1-1 with about 15 seconds to go in the first round then he got caught with the head shot and another hit.....5-1 down .... second round the other guy was happy just to sit back and keep the lead as best he could. A great learning opportunity.

Unfortunately Fergus O Brien (-63kg) was suffering from an ankle injury leading up the fight and we knew that it would be an issue. Unfortunately Fergus foot packed in early in the fight after dishing out some hard hits. Fergus struggled through to end of the fight and was outpointed.

Gareth Whyte was again brilliant on the coaching side of things. Gareth keeps his cool and really knows the game and oozes confidence for the guys. Another great competition. If you are interested in competing then contact Bertie Nicholson (NI Kyorugi Team Coach) on 07870811970.
