Gold in Bonnie Scotland 15/Mar 2009
sc Competition success continues for WTF Junior Korugi fighters, this time a little further afield in Scotland. Sun 15th March saw junior NI Squad development fighters compete in the 2009 Scottish Cup kyorugi competition, in Carronshore, near Edinburgh, which attracts teams from all over GB and Ireland.

The team of four came away with 2 gold, 2 silver (with the opportunity for 2 further being denied due to injury and having to leave to get the ferry home!)

Kyorugi is the combat sporting side of Taekwondo. It is a dynamic, fast action display of superb, movie style kicks. It takes effort and dedication to go all the way to the top but through the NI Kyorugi Squad Training we hope to get people to 2012!

Avocado or Green Banana 10/Nov 2008
sc When your trying to make the weight limit for competition then this is the sort of question you need to ask.especially if your talking to a Sports Nutritionist. Andrea McNeilly is the Sports Nutritionist working for the Northern Ireland kyorugi team preparing for the 2008 Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships at the end of Nov.

We are really pleased to have Andrea support, explained Bertie Nicholson, NI Junior/Senior WTF Kyorugi Coach.

Andrea is very well qualified for the job having graduated from the University of Ulster, Coleraine with a First Class Honours degree in Human Nutrition and Diploma in Industrial Studies
(with commendation).

As part of her degree Andrea spent fourteen months working as part of the Nutritional Sciences team at GlaxoSmithKline, predominantly with the Lucozade Sport brand for which she received an outstanding contribution award.

So when Andrea suggested avocado, naturally we asked avocado. The main reason that avocado is included is that it is a low GI food, which is also low in calories and contains high amounts of the 'good monounsaturated fats' which are essential for a healthy heart. Avocados are commonly incorporated into weight loss diets, the rationale being that they keep you fuller for longer, removing the temptation to snack or graze on inappropriate foods such as those high in fat/sugar/salt which interfere with weight control. They are also rich in potassium, B vitamins and fibre, which are equally important for athletes. If the fighters do not like avocado, I would suggest unripe bananas as a substitute. These are high in starch which the body takes longer to digest, helping to keep you fuller for longer. Bananas are probably more palatable than avocado, which for most people is an acquired taste! Bananas are also lower in calories (per 100g) so may be more beneficial for those on a weight reducing diet

Black Belt Success 10/Sep 2008
sc The TAGB has just held its biggest grading in Northern Ireland with 33 people gaining black belts from first to third degree. Caroline Beck led the way gaining her third degree. Thirteen people gained their second degree black belts and twenty people achieved the coveted black belt. The students were put through their paces by five 7th Degree Masters of Tae Kwon Do who travelled to Northern Ireland specially for the grading. These masters included the Chairman of the TAGB Mr Dave Oliver. The students had to perform patterns line work and set sparring. They had a theory test and had to compete in several rounds of sparring. The students are now looking forward to participating in the largest Tae Kwon Do tournament of the year with over 1000 competitors the British takes place in Nottingham in October.

A First: Joint WTF/ITF Training 10/Aug 2008
sc It was a first to have fighters from WTF and ITF Strength and Condition training together. The venue was the Univeristy of Ulster and the coach was Mr William Moore (2nd from right). Strength and Conditioning is a must to get fighters faster and to be able to last throughout the competition.
This training is made possible through funding from Sport NI.
